Potholing
What Is SUE Potholing?
Discovery Hydrovac’s Subsurface Utility Location Services (also known as potholing or daylighting) is a non-destructive, non-mechanical process of excavating and exposing underground utilities before beginning a project. Using vacuum excavation, we can safely locate and visually confirm the exact horizontal and vertical location, type of material, and depth of all underground objects on your site.
SUE is used in the engineering phase of a project and allows engineers to develop their construction plans knowing exactly what types of utilities are located on the site and where they’re located. Our SUE potholing process is accurate, fast, and keeps project costs low since improper documentation can be costly if utilities get hit. Using air or hydro excavation, we also minimize damage to surrounding soil—saving you money on future projects at that location.
SUE Vacuum Excavation Potholing
It’s helpful for crew members to visually see the utilities they’ll be working on and around during a project. Digging blind or with traditional excavation equipment like backhoes can make digs dangerous not just to the underground lines, but to your entire crew.
Discovery Hydrovac uses vacuum excavation to safely unearth underground utilities on your site—keeping the surrounding area undisturbed and your crew away from harm. We use either pressurized water or air to loosen the soil and vacuum it out of the pothole, exposing any underground lines or pipes. Once the work is done or the construction project is completed, the displaced dirt can be reused as backfill.
